Emma Donaldson-Feilder, an occupational psychologist and director of Affinity Health at Work, suggests five good ways to ensure that both leaders and their employees can avoid the downsides of the digital world.
- Be conscious of how you use digital media and technology. Reflect on how to benefit from the advantages and avoid the disadvantages. Make a list of these.
- Think about how your use of technology impacts on those you lead. Communicate clear expectations and beware of what you are role-modelling. For example, avoid sending messages out of working hours. This will give people the idea that they also need to respond out of hours.
- Put away all technology when you enter a meeting or have a conversation with someone. Instead, be ‘fully present’.
- Turn off push notifications, so you have control over when you check messages, rather than feeling compelled to look at them every time you see a notification.
- Create device-free time in your week so you can totally recover.
