Taking part in the programme has only whet my appetite for business. Now, I have a greater insight and appreciation for what leaders do, and I will continue to expand upon that.
Arun spent the day with John Manzoni, Permanent Secretary, The Cabinet Office
The day was very busy and informative. Throughout the day we travelled across the city to various meetings, internal and external. The range of issues and problems that had to be dealt with was vast and the capacity to retain information across the transport industry was very impressive. I was surprised that there was so much to be done in one day and the schedule was fully packed.
Tiffany spent the day with David Brown, Group Chief Executive, Go-Ahead
The opportunity to shadow Jon Stanton and engage with corporate level executives was a fascinating experience. The day consisted of various meetings with the executive leadership team in Glasgow, a teleconference call to North America and a visit to Weir Group’s Research & Development Centre. Whilst walking around the research facilities it struck me how enthusiastic the employees were when engaging with Jon and this highlighted the importance of a global leader being visible to all levels of the organisation. The experience far exceeded my expectations and demonstrated the level of dedication required to be a successful Chief Executive.

The day with KIER was a fantastic insight into high-level, corporate working. The efficiency and enthusiasm with which everyone went about their work was obvious to see. For me, this reiterated how essential it is to pursue an industry/sector that you are passionate about; as Haydn said, ‘Money will be fun for a while but it’s no coincidence that if you enjoy what you’re doing you have a high chance of being successful.
Jack spent the day with Haydn Mursell, CEO, Kier Group Plc
I loved it - I was surprised at how hands-on and varied the two days were, it really allowed me to see into every aspect of Dame Helen's working life. It wasn't all meetings; there was hiking, exploring caves and meeting volunteers from all parts of the National Trust.
Sam spent the day with Dame Helen Ghosh, National Trust
The day involved getting an insight into what Standard Chartered does and where its revenue comes from. I spent time on the trading floor, with the wealth managers and meeting with most of the business managers. I also sat in on an interview between the Wall Street journal and Bill Winters. What did surprise me was the amount of the business I got to learn about; I wasn't just learning about what Bill did.
Charles spent the day with Bill Winters CBE, Group Chief Executive, Standard Chartered PLC
The day was an incredible and full on experience – I loved it. It actually exceeded my expectations as I was able to be a part of such a variety of experiences throughout the day: from an Executive luncheon to factory tours, marketing meetings, Chief Executive meetings and one-on-one in-depth conversations with the CEO himself; it left me buzzing and completely motivated to put into action the knowledge gathered from the day.
Lakechia spent the day with Ian Filby, CEO, DFS
When I arrived at the office, I instantly felt a sense of community. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there. I was lucky to be present for Sage's strategy planning day. It focused on what the company had achieved in the previous year as well as future plans. It was a great chance to engage with the executives as well as ask them any questions directly; this ensured that everyone knew what was going on within the company.
Christina spent the day with Stephen Kelly, Chief Executive, Sage
The day was a great experience; David Sproul couldn’t have been more down to earth. I met a number of his team who gave me some perspective on what it would be like to work for the firm. It was great seeing how he dealt with various difficult situations in a variety of ways. The thing that surprised me most was the extent to which he was in demand, and the level to which his entire day would be planned down to the minute.
Rupert spent the day with David Sproul, CEO, Deloitte UK
One of the major points I learnt was to always make yourself the most enthusiastic person and to really show why you want something. The day also showed how a company is run. I sat in on meetings looking at their numbers, people and new ideas. I learnt how to run a meeting as a CEO. In the future I can use the leadership skills that I learnt from observing Ed. These include being constantly positive and enthusiastic, constantly organised and knowing his business inside out.
James spent the day with Ed Williams, CEO, Edelman UK
I was apprehensive before arriving, however Nigel had planned a full day of meetings for me. I was lucky enough to meet up with other valuable members of staff including their Events Manager who gave me lots of advice regarding the events industry. I was also able to sit in on a meeting between their HR team and a consultancy company seeing how much time and effort goes into helping the employees reach their full potential. A key part of the day which will stay with me forever was the very first meeting I encountered – between Nigel and the Financial Times! This was an opportunity to see how newspapers gather information and how companies portray their plans.
Beth spent the day with Nigel Wilson, Group Chief Executive, Legal & General PLC
