The selection process

Finalists are chosen through a rigorous recruitment process designed to gauge their leadership potential. Learn more about the process below.

Phase 1: Applying for CEOx1Day

You must complete and submit an online application which will be reviewed by Odgers Berndtson’s team of executive search experts. Your application must include:

  • Your contact information

  • Information about your studies

  • A resume summarising your paid/unpaid work experience, extra-curricular activities, community involvement or charity work, and awards

  • Short essay answers on the topic of your achievements, as well as your thoughts on courage and experience of leadership

  • A Non-Disclosure Agreement in case you are selected for the CEO meeting

Evaluation Criteria for stage 1:

Applications will be evaluated on students’ study success, the breadth of their work/volunteer experience and extracurricular activities, and the quality of the essay answers.

Timing for stage 1:

Applications run from February 6 to March 3, 2017.

Phase 2: Video interviews

After the first qualification, successful candidates will be invited to a video interview. In this phase, you will get 5 questions and time to reply whenever it suits you. The video interview will complement your written application and will help us to select the quarter-finalists.

Evaluation Criteria:

Clear and energetic communication. Ability to concentrate on the essential points in your answers.

Timing for Phase 2:

Early March 2017

Phase 3: In-Person Interviews

Quarter-finalists will be invited to an interview at the Odgers Berndtson Helsinki office. They will have an opportunity to meet and network with Odgers Berndtson’s consultants and partners.

Evaluation Criteria:

Applicants will be evaluated on the quality of answers to the interview questions and their ability to articulate themselves.

Timing for Phase 3:

Early April 2017 (specific timing to be agreed with each person)

Phase 4: Activity Days

McKinsey & Company's Helsinki office warmly welcomes participants for an exercise on leadership in a team. The exercise is designed to foster and test creativity, problem-solving, and team building skills in a safe and supportive environment. At the end of the day, McKinsey participants will offer participants the chance to get feedback on their team's performance.

Timing for Phase 4:

April 20, 2017

Phase 5: Leadership Assessment

Selected semi-finalists will take part in a Hogan leadership assessment and receive personal feedback from our consultants.

Evaluation Criteria:

Applicants will be assessed on the strengths and competencies that are reflective of a confident and ambitious individual who handles stress effectively, is astute, dependable, and values learning and developing new skills.

Timing for Phase 5:

April 2017

Phase 6: CEOx1Day Event and Dinner with CEOs

Each finalist will spend a full day shadowing a CEO and learning about their background, career path, and how they create value in their organisation. Finalists will have an opportunity to spend one-on-one time with the CEO, attend meetings and tour the company premises. Each CEO x 1 Day event will include elements unique to the host company that ensure it is a meaningful and memorable experience for both the student and CEO.

Additionally, the finalists will be invited to an informal dinner with participating CEOs to learn more about each other to secure a successful CEO day.

Timing for Phase 6:

May-June 2017

Phase 7: Promotion to client companies

The finalists' CVs will be sent to all participating companies and other selected Odgers Berndtson client companies for potential recruitment.
